As of 2023, LaGuardia was the third busiest airport in New York, but the 19th busiest in the U.S. Whether you’re flying in or out of the airport, there’s plenty to do and know about LaGuardia.
Navigating to and from LaGuardia
LaGuardia is roughly 10 miles from downtown Manhattan. Located off the Grand Central Parkway and on the East River, it has three terminals which can be accessed via different exits off the Grand Central Parkway.
If you’re navigating to or from the airport, there are plenty of options including:
- Public Transportation: There are five different bus routes — M60, Q70, Q47, Q48 and Q72— that can take travelers to and from the airport. M60 and Q70 routes are select bus services that make fewer stops and offer luggage racks. There are no public rail lines connected to the airport.
- Car rental: There are several car rental companies with counters in the airport. There is also a rental car facility, and many agencies provide frequent free shuttles from LaGuardia to the rental car center.
- Rideshare: There is a designated rideshare pick up area at each terminal. Look for signage for Car Services and App-based Rides in each terminal. The airport recommends that you wait until you are in the pickup area to schedule your ride.
Parking at LaGuardia
Each terminal at LaGuardia has its own parking lot. You can check the availability of each lot on LaGuardia’s website and prebook parking. Daily parking rates range from $25 to $89 per day depending on the lot you park in.
There are parking options beyond the terminal lots that include:
- Economy and premium parking lots: In addition to the terminal lots, there is also pre-paid economy parking, reserved premium parking and discount parking. These parking options must be booked in advance.
- Cell phone waiting lot: If you need somewhere short term to wait, there is a cell phone lot on 94th Street between 23rd Ave and Ditmars Blvd. It’s complimentary and open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to midnight.
- Long-Term parking: If you plan to park at LaGuardia for more than 30 days in any lot, contact ABM. Cars parked for more than 30 days that are not registered with ABM will be towed.
- EV parking: There are EV charging stations in terminal B and C parking lots. Electricity is provided free of charge.
Terminals at LaGuardia
There are three terminals at LaGuardia:
- Terminal A: has one concourse serving Gates 1-6
- Terminal B: has two concourses serving Gates 11-59
- Terminal C: has four concourses serving Gates 61-98
LaGuardia is undergoing an $8 billion renovation that is expected to wrap up in 2025. As part of the airport's reconstruction, the new terminal C encompasses the old terminals C and D.
The terminals are in three separate buildings and connected by a free airport shuttle. The shuttle runs every 8–10 minutes during peak times and every 15 minutes during non-peak times. It also takes travelers to parking lots, car rental facilities and car service pick up areas.
How long it takes to navigate through LaGuardia
Each terminal has its own check-in, security and baggage services. It typically takes anywhere from two to ten minutes, depending on the terminal, to get to your gate from security.
Generally, airport officials recommend that you arrive at the airport no later than two hours before a domestic flight and at least three hours before an international flight. If you have TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry, you may find shorter than average wait times to get through airport screening. For reference the airport's homepage has estimated security wait times for both terminals.
