Where you can apply for Global Entry

Time to read min

    Quick insights

    • Customs and Border Protection (CBP) conducts Global Entry interviews at enrollment centers, which are often located in airports or government buildings.
    • New appointment times for Global Entry interviews are posted on the first Monday of every month to the agency’s scheduling page.
    • Applicants may get a walk-in appointment through the Enrollment on Arrival program in certain circumstances.

It can be thrilling when you get conditional approval on your Global Entry application. Before you can reap the benefits of this program, you need to complete the in-person interview, which could mean driving to a major airport. In some cases, interviews are booked out for months.

In this article, we’ll explore some things to know about Global Entry enrollment centers and how to get an interview at one.

    Global Entry enrollment centers explained

After your application is submitted and conditionally approved—meaning you’re on track to enroll in the program—the next step for the Global Entry program is a background check and interview. For the Global Entry interview, CBP requires you to visit an enrollment center.

Enrollment centers are typically located within select airports or other locations, such as government buildings. You typically need to schedule an appointment in advance, but some participating airports accept walk-in appointments. Appointment availability at enrollment centers can vary by location and time of year.

Here are some things the CBP officer typically does during an interview:

    • Verify your identity: The CBP officer reviews your required Global Entry documents.
    • Review your application: The officer confirms the details of the background information you provided in your application, such as your employment or travel history.
    • Collect your biometric data: The CBP officer will usually fingerprint you and take your photo.
    • Ask questions: The CBP officer may ask you questions regarding the information you provided in your application.

The information gathered during the interview will be used to conduct a background check.

    Global Entry walk-in interviews

For some applicants, a walk-in interview may be an option. Enrollment on Arrival is a CBP program that allows applicants with conditional approval to complete their interview without scheduling an appointment.

Applicants must arrive in the U.S. from an international flight at a participating airport to use this program. CBP provides current information regarding the airports and their hours of operation on the Enrollment on Arrival webpage.

According to a CBP press release, Enrollment on Arrival is the “most accessible and efficient method to complete the interview process required for membership.”

When you land in an international terminal, look for signs that direct you to a CBP officer. The officer can usually conduct the interview during the admissibility inspection.

Note that you are not guaranteed an interview through Enrollment on Arrival. If the enrollment center is closed or has a lengthy wait, it’s possible you won’t be able to get an interview.

Getting a Global Entry interview quickly

Sometimes applicants find that there are no available appointments at their preferred enrollment center for months. If you encounter this roadblock and have an upcoming trip, it can be stressful. There are several ways to expedite your Global Entry application.

A few strategies could potentially help you get your membership sooner:

    • Look on the first Monday of the month: CBP announced that they open new TTP appointments at 9:00 a.m. local time on the first Monday of every month. Checking the agency’s scheduling page at that time may help you get an appointment more quickly.
    • Check back frequently for last-minute appointments: Some applicants may need to cancel their appointments. If you check the agency’s scheduling page frequently, it’s possible you may book a spot as openings become available.
    • Travel to another enrollment center: This option may be worth considering if you’re already visiting an area with an enrollment center that has available appointments. Interviews are relatively quick, so it likely won’t take much time away from your trip.
    • Switch to TSA PreCheck®: Depending on how often you fly internationally, TSA PreCheck may be sufficient for your needs. Global Entry membership includes TSA Precheck, which is why both types of members can use those screening lanes.

Keep in mind there’s no guarantee that you’ll get an appointment in your preferred time slot.

    In summary

Interviews for Global Entry membership are conducted at CBP’s designated enrollment centers. Many enrollment centers are located in international airports or government buildings, where you can schedule an appointment to complete your interview. Appointment slots are released on the first Monday of the month.

Some applicants may prefer to complete the interview via the Enrollment on Arrival program. This program allows applicants with conditional approval to secure an interview at the airport upon their return from an international flight. Applicants don’t need an appointment to use this program, but it is subject to availability.
