This Sapphire Reserve Trip will be available to book on Tuesday, August 5th. Visit experiences.chase.com and follow @chasetravel and @chasesapphire on Instagram to be among the first to learn about new Chase Travel Experiences.
Día de los Muertos observances are a part of fall festivities around the world, but they’re especially significant in Oaxaca, where the city comes alive with candlelight, live music, parties and parades each year.
Experience Oaxaca’s vibrant cuisine, architecture and traditions when you book Sapphire Reserve’s Dia de Los Muertos trip in Oaxaca, Mexico. Designed by Chase Travel and bookable at experiences.chase.com, the experience includes a four-night stay at the design-forward Pug Seal, plus food tours, studio visits, private mezcal tastings and a once-in-a-lifetime Día de Los Muertos celebration.
What’s Included in the Package
The trip includes a four-night stay at Pug Seal, a boutique hotel housed in an early 19th-century mansion in the historic center of Oaxaca City. The hotel is far from old-school: The courtyard features vibrant frescoes by painter Rafael Urigias, who drew inspiration from Zapotec iconography, and the 20 rooms are decorated in rich jewel tones.
The trip also includes a packed lineup of cultural events: a street food tour in Oaxaca; an artist studio visit in the village of Teotitlán del Valle; a tour and tasting at mezcal distillery Casa Silencio; and, of course, an exclusive Día de Los Muertos celebration in a local cemetery. Transportation to and from all scheduled events is also covered, and new surprises will be announced ahead of the trip.
What You’ll Do
Your four-day itinerary begins with welcome cocktails and dinner. Afterward, you’ll retire to your chic room at Pug Seal.
Friday starts with a walking tour of Oaxaca to taste some of the city’s famous street food and visit a few markets. That evening, in Diá de Los Muertos tradition, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to an ofrenda (altar) in the hotel—bring pictures of loved ones that have passed or print them on site and you’ll be able to add them to the altar as part of a ceremony. Next, you’ll head to a local graveyard for an authentic Diá de Los Muertos celebration, including cocktails and dinner. If you need a snack when you get back to the hotel, hit up the Chase Travel Mercado, where chef Edgar Rico will be dishing up esquites, tacos, cocktails and more.
On Saturday, you’ll enjoy an art and architecture tour of Oaxaca before making the 45-minute drive to the village of Teotitlán del Valle, where you’ll have the chance to visit the studio of renowned artist Pantaleon Ruiz and learn about traditional Oaxacan craftsmanship, like weaving, Alebrije design and candlemaking.
On your last full day, Sunday, you’ll visit Casa Silencio, an award-winning mezcal distillery about an hour outside town. There, you’ll enjoy a tour and tasting, followed by a farewell dinner set to live mariachi music.
Where You’ll Stay
Enjoy a four-night stay at Pug Seal, a boutique hotel in the heart of historic Oaxaca City. The building itself has roots in the colonial era, but was transformed into a hotel in 2020, gaining a beautiful staircase by Sabino Guisú and brass inlays that feature Zapotec motifs. Each of the 20 rooms is unique, done up in a combination of jewel tones and rich textiles.
When you’re not in your room, head to the common courtyard, where colorful frescoes by painter Rafael Urigias reference Zapotec iconography and celebrate Mexico’s vibrant cultural heritage.
