How to find your TSA PreCheck® status

minute read

There's more than one way to find your TSA PreCheck® status and we're here to break them down for you. TSA PreCheck status is designed to expedite your passage through U.S. airport security. This includes several benefits that may make getting to your destination a bit easier. Some of the perks associated with TSA PreCheck include keeping your shoes, belt and light jacket on through security as well as keeping certain liquids and electronics you may have in your carry-on. So, it makes sense that you're eager to find out the status of your application for TSA PreCheck.

How to check TSA PreCheck status

To check your TSA PreCheck status, consider the following:

    • Visit the TSA PreCheck website and click on the "Check Status" button.
    • Enter your full name, date of birth and passport number or your Known Traveler Number (KTN).
    • Review your TSA PreCheck status. You'll know your membership is active if the website displays your current status, expiration date and KTN (if applicable).
    • Apply if you've not yet registered for TSA PreCheck membership. The website will notify you when you're not currently enrolled and provide application instructions.

Other ways of verifying your TSA PreCheck status include:

    • Logging into your frequent flyer account. If you have TSA PreCheck and provided your KTN to the airline, your TSA PreCheck status will be included in your account information.
    • Checking your boarding pass. Assuming your TSA PreCheck remains active, this status will be noted on each boarding pass for airlines where you registered with it.
    • Preselecting notifications for email, text or phone when you complete your application.

Understanding the TSA PreCheck approval process

Applying for TSA PreCheck involves several steps. You may want to get started soon if you're planning a trip because the TSA PreCheck application typically requires you to interact with the agency and that may take time.

    • Submit your application: You can complete your application online or in-person at an enrollment center. The application includes personal information like your name, address and date of birth.
    • Approve the background check: The TSA includes a request for a background check in your application. If you approve this check, it will include a review of your citizenship status, any criminal record and other relevant personal data. If you reject this check, you cannot be approved for TSA PreCheck.
    • Provide your fingerprints: After the TSA conducts your background check, they will request your fingerprints. You can get fingerprinted at a TSA enrollment center.
    • Pay the fee: The current $78 fee covers TSA PreCheck membership for five years, though that cost is subject to change. Payment can be made online by credit card or at an enrollment center by credit card, money order, company check or certified/cashier's check.
    • Set your notifications: If you pass the background check and meet the eligibility requirements, you can get your TSA PreCheck approval notification. So, it may be a good idea to set that notification up when you apply.

Once approved, you will receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN), which is valid for five years. Once you're approved, you can use the TSA PreCheck lanes at participating airports. Simply enter your KTN when reserving your flight or add it to your frequent flyer profile. Keep in mind that TSA PreCheck does not guarantee expedited travel for every flight. Also, TSA sometimes requires additional screening measures for certain applicants. The TSA may also revoke your TSA PreCheck approval at any time if you violate rules or otherwise lose your eligibility.

How long does it take to get TSA PreCheck?

According to the TSA, some travelers could receive their Known Traveler Number in three to five days, while other applications may take up to 60 days. TSA PreCheck processing times can vary because there are many factors, such as the background check and fingerprints, prior to approval.

Can you get TSA PreCheck same day?

It is highly unlikely, if not impossible, that you could get TSA PreCheck within the same day. Although there may be exceptions to this, it may serve you best to set your expectations for a longer TSA PreCheck timeline. After all, with compulsory background checks and fingerprints, there are various stages to the process.

    In summary

When you have TSA PreCheck status, travel may be smoother thanks to expedited airport entry. So, it may be worth the extra steps required to apply for TSA PreCheck and access these benefits for a better travel experience.
