It may be possible to extend the original warranty on an item if you’re a Chase Sapphire cardmember. Extended Warranty Protection is one of many cardmember benefits that come with these rewards credit cards. This purchase protection could help you limit losses due to product failure.
Let’s examine what Chase Sapphire’s Extended Warranty Protection has to offer.
What is an extended warranty benefit?
Some credit cards offer their cardmembers extended warranty protection as a complimentary credit card benefit. This protection generally extends the coverage for an eligible item beyond the end date of the original manufacturer’s warranty. The extended policy begins once the original warranty expires, and any limitations from the original policy usually apply to the extended warranty protection.
Typically you’ll need to purchase an item with the eligible credit card and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to activate the original warranty before any extended warranty protection applies.
You may feel more confident making major purchases with your credit card when you have an extended warranty benefit.
How Chase Sapphire Extended Warranty Protection works
Chase Sapphire’s Extended Warranty Protection provides one additional year of coverage on an item with a store-provided or store-purchased dealer original warranty of three years or less. To be eligible, the item must be purchased with the Chase Sapphire credit card or with rewards points redeemed from that credit card.
For example, if you purchase a laptop with your Chase Sapphire card, and the laptop manufacturer provides a three-year warranty, the Extended Warranty Protection benefit may provide an additional year of coverage. That means you could be covered on eligible losses for a total of four years.
You have the option to register your purchase in advance by submitting a copy of the item’s sales receipt and the manufacturer’s warranty information to the Benefit Administrator. You’re not required to do this, but it may help you use your Extended Warranty Protection if you need it in the near future.
Coverages and limitations with Chase Sapphire Extended Warranty Protection
The Extended Warranty Protection includes what would have been covered under the item’s original warranty. Coverage is limited to the item’s original price, excluding shipping and handling fees, up to a maximum of $10,000 per item. The maximum benefit amount per account is $50,000.
Some purchases are excluded from coverage:
- Motorized vehicles or their motors, equipment or accessories
- Costs other than those specifically covered under the terms of the original manufacturer’s written U.S. repair warranty
- Items purchased for resale, professional or commercial use
- Rented or leased items
- Computer software
- Medical equipment
- Used or pre-owned items
