Historically, the Upper East SideOpens overlay hasn’t been associated with words like “new” or “cool.” If anything, the neighborhood, which runs along Central Park from roughly East 59th to 96th streets, has been associated with being, well, historic. But over the past few years, the city’s most stereotypically sedate neighborhood has embraced transformation. Its latest additions span dining, retail and art, including smart reboots of old classics, imports from downtown and cities like L.A., and even a few totally new ventures.

      What to Do

The Upper East Side “renaissance” is all about just that: rebirth, renovation and breathing new life into old standards. The Frick Collection, a Central Park-adjacent mansion turned museum known for its collection of old master paintings, reopened last year after a half-decade total revamp. For something more current, spend time at Salon 94, the renowned art gallery that now occupies a remarkable town house on East 89th Street, then stop by White Cube, the London-born contemporary space that set up shop on Madison Avenue in 2023.

      Where to Eat

If the neighborhood’s hottest tables are any indication, then what’s old is definitely new. An uptown classic since 1937, Le Veau d’OrOpens overlay changed hands several times before closing in 2019, but it’s recently been revived by the team behind Tribeca’s Frenchette, with a menu that pairs pâté en croûte with natural wine. For a spot that merely feels like a throwback, there’s Chez FifiOpens overlay, where you can eat filet mignon au poivre and then head upstairs for a martini under a famous artwork. Cafe CommerceOpens overlay is a cozy, low-key remake of a West Village favorite, and the bar Nightly’sOpens overlay skews familiar, too, with comfy American bites and cocktails. Once you’ve made your way through the burgeoning bistro scene, consider trying some of the city’s very best sushi spots. Sushi NozOpens overlay is a world-class experience, and now you can also try their stand-up bar, Noz MarketOpens overlay, where in-the-know connoisseurs pop in for the afternoon hand roll happy hour. For a different format, Suki DesuOpens overlay serves rice bowls stacked with at least six types of raw seafood.

      Where to Shop

Cool-kid shopping no longer requires a trip south of Houston, thanks to a diverse series of openings. In 2025, edgy-luxe womenswear brand KHAITE scaled beyond its Soho boutique with a new Madison Avenue store, where the architecture is as memorable as the clothes, while Lower East Side-grown Kallmeyer, known for its elevated women’s pieces, did the same just 10 blocks north. Both followed vintage-inspired denim brand Still Here, a Nolita native that landed uptown in 2023. New imports have joined from other cities, too. Down a charming alley on East 78th Street, L.A.’s Violet Grey has set up its curated selection of beauty products in an arrangement that feels like stepping into a classic Hollywood star’s medicine cabinet. Nearby you’ll also find Cali-bred multi-brand designer shop elysewalker, and next door, the tailored staples of Atlanta natives Sid & Ann Mashburn. Intrigued by worldly finds but prefer housewares to clothes? Check out Casa Salmaa, which curates beautiful objects from around the globe.
