The Art of Travel: Portugal Through Designer Kelly Wearstler’s Eyes
Designer Kelly Wearstler went looking for inspiration for her studio’s next projects and found it in Portugal, where every turn reveals texture and beauty.
As a Chase Travel Global Tastemaker, Wearstler traveled through Melides and Lisbon with New York Magazine for the latest episode of The Art of Travel series, which follows top artists, designers and musicians around the world for a behind-the-scenes look at how the conversations you have, the objects you uncover and the memories you collect fuel the creative process.
“Every object has a little bit of a story behind it,” Wearstler says, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the centuries-old tile work decorating the corners of Lisbon, or the handcrafted ceramics on display in Melides’ village storefronts. They’re all a reminder that travel is less about collecting destinations, and more about the discoveries you make along the way.
Once a country that sent explorers off to the edges of the known world, Portugal’s spirit of curiosity lives on in the balance between old and new today. You can find the suites of a Christian Louboutin–designed hotel alongside the ruins of a 15th-century church, or a farm-to-table restaurant like A Obra steps from a family-run market stall.
“Portugal has this rare ability to keep history alive and in motion,” Wearstler says. “The old and the new in constant conversation. That’s what I’m taking home with me: a new perspective.”
Watch Wearstler’s The Art of Travel film for a closer look at how she spent her time in Portugal, and to spark some inspiration of your own—and stay tuned for more installments of the series.
