    Stay Here For

Your first visit to the Amalfi Coast, when you’ll want that iconic view—without the frenzy.

With its clutch of pastel buildings tumbling down cliffs to meet the sea, Positano offers the kind of postcard-perfect view that’s come to define the Amalfi Coast. The once-humble fishing village has over time grown into a symbol of southern Italy, immortalized by writers like John Steinbeck, who described it in the 1950s as “a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” More than 70 years later, the sentiment still holds.

But Positano’s popularity comes at a price: crowds. Enter HVF Villa Franca Positano. Set high above the bustle, it offers a serene vantage point from which to take it all in—much like the Roman gods once believed to dwell in these hills, or the Neapolitan aristocrats who were known to summer here in centuries past.

Villa Franca is a true family affair. Third-generation owners Massimo Napoli and Rosa Taddeo inherited it from Taddeo’s grandfather, Giuseppe Russo, who opened the family home to guests in the 1940s. Named for Giuseppe’s daughter, Franca, the hotel was later transformed by Napoli and its namesake’s daughter, Taddeo, into a sleek showcase of modern art and design; see its sculptural front desk modeled after Positano’s topography and contemporary art curated in partnership with a local gallery.

There are three distinct food and beverage concepts, including the beachside Chez Black—the perfect spot for a casual lunch after a morning of shopping in Positano—and the destination restaurant, Li Galli, where you can chase a seafood tasting with blue lobster pasta dashed with capers from nearby Pantelleria. The hotel also touts a compact spa, featuring a treatment room, steam room and hot tub (try the four-hands Positano Massage). But it really is all about that trademark view, and as such, most guests, yourself included, will happily spend the lion’s share of their time here on the rooftop or on their private terraces.

How to Make the Most of Your Cardmember Benefits

Hotel Villa Franca is a member of The Edit by Chase Travel℠, a collection of hand-picked hotels with premium benefits for Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers. Cardmembers who book through The Edit will receive special benefits including daily breakfast and a $100 property credit, along with early check-in, late checkout and a room upgrade, when available. Check out how these benefits came to life during our stay at Hotel Villa Franca:

    The Essentials

    The Location

Villa Franca sits just above the town of Positano, which you can reach on foot with a 15-minute downhill walk—or a breezy ride in the hotel’s electric golf cart, which you can also take back up.

    The Room

Villa Franca’s 45 rooms and suites span two buildings: 27 in the main structure and 17 in a smaller annex just up the road. Every room has a view, though sea-facing ones command a premium. Inside, you’ll find thoughtful touches like linen sheets, a Nespresso machine, marble bathrooms with custom bath products and in-room iPads loaded with hotel info.

Room size is the biggest differentiator. HVF Classic Rooms can feel snug, so it’s worth booking a Superior Room if space matters. Want extra outdoor space? Go for a Terrace Room. And for the ultimate splurge, one of the four HVF Master Suites—each individually designed with curated art—delivers top-tier luxury.

    The Bars and Restaurants

Li Galli Restaurant boasts views of its namesake islands.

Despite its boutique size, the hotel punches above its weight in food and drink. Gold Sky Restaurant Club, its rooftop bar and restaurant, offers 360-degree views and cocktails like the Golden Rose, with gin, grapefruit juice, rose cordial and tonic water, while Li Galli Restaurant, its fine-dining spot, is one of the most sought-after reservations in town. O’RO Incanto offers a more relaxed option, serving elevated Neapolitan comfort food and cocktails, such as the signature Franca’s Hug, which incorporates ingredients like pear puree and sage syrup. Prefer vino? The hotel also touts a 1,000-label wine cellar, which occasionally hosts intimate tastings with a sommelier.

    The Standout Feature

The rooftop pool, reserved exclusively for guests, is a knockout. Staff members bring iced tea as you lounge, and the adjacent bar serves drinks and fresh seafood dishes. Don’t skip the linguine with clams, green peppers and lime.

    The Time to Go

Villa Franca operates seasonally, from April through October. Summer is best for sunbathing—but it’s also the most crowded. Spring and fall offer warm weather and fewer tourists.

    The Vibe

Venture out to a beach club or post up at the pool? At Villa Franca, the choice is yours.

What’s on the speakers? That sleek, ambient lounge music you’ll hear at every stylish Mediterranean resort—but that you’re never able to name.

The perfect spot for your social media post: At the rooftop pool, of course. Pose at the far end with the sea behind you for the ultimate brag.

Are guests staying in or going out? It’s a mix. Many head out during the day for shopping, sightseeing or beach time, then return for rooftop cocktails or a Li Galli Restaurant dinner. Others stake out a sun lounger and stay put all day.

The one local activity you can’t miss: Waking early to hike the Path of the Gods before the crowds arrive, before returning for a fulsome breakfast spread at O’RO Incanto.

The cool fact you were surprised to learn: The wine cellar used to be a water cistern. Way back when, it stored water for dry spells—transported via donkeys, which, on occasion, still roam these hills.

The thing you’re telling everyone about when you get home: That dessert at Li Galli Restaurant, which is served on a custom Amalfi Coast-themed game board—complete with edible dice, cards and currency.
