      Stay Here For

Bragging rights—you’ll likely be the first in your friend group to touch down on one of the Caribbean’s least-visited islands.

If you’ve never heard of South Caicos, you’re not alone. The tiny Turks and Caicos island—which is all of 8 square miles, with just over 1,000 residents—had its heyday back in the 1600s, when it was one of the world’s largest producers of salt. But with the 2025 launch of the first nonstop flight from the U.S. in decades, South Caicos is getting attention once again, poised to welcome travelers in search of a more laid-back, less-developed getaway. And Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, opened in spring 2025, is only adding to the buzz.

After entering the hotel lobby through wooden doors intricately carved with patterns inspired by the island’s Indigenous Taino people, the first thing guests see is a pair of ceremonial duho chairs (replicas of those found in local caves), flanking a large bowl filled with chunks of South Caicos salt. The beachfront resort, whose name is a portmanteau meaning “salt of the earth,” aims to celebrate the island’s people, history and proud fishing and salt-producing heritage, both visually and operationally.

In the 100 rooms, textile art pieces and pendant lights hanging from sisal rope nod to the archipelago’s past as a major producer of the natural fiber. Brine, one of six restaurants, serves multicourse dinners with salt pairings, while Flamingo Café references the long-legged birds that roost in the neighboring salinas. And when guests aren’t feasting on local conch salad beside any of the resort’s four pools, they’re encouraged to explore South Caicos on excursions guided by experts, eager to share their home with the curious couples, adventurous families and seclusion-seeking honeymooners the hotel has so far attracted.

If you’re into bonefishing, diving or simply floating in impossibly blue seas—all on a quiet, under-the-radar island—Salterra is your spot.

How to Make the Most of Your Cardmember Benefits

Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa is a member of The Edit by Chase Travel℠, a collection of hand-picked hotels with premium benefits for Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers. Cardmembers who book through The Edit will receive special benefits including daily breakfast and a $100 property credit, along with early check-in, late checkout and a room upgrade, when available. Check out how these benefits came to life during our stay at Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa:

      The Essentials

      The Location

South Caicos is a 20-minute puddle-jumper flight from Providenciales, where most international flights touch down. Alternatively, nonstop American Airlines flights from Miami to South Caicos’s Norman B. Saunders Sr. International Airport are now offered. The resort itself is a 10-minute drive from the airport, on a half-mile stretch of beachfront at the island’s southern end.

      The Time to Go

Humpback whales migrate through the Caicos Passage from January through April, and guests have a front-row seat from Salterra’s beach.

      The Rooms

Salterra’s 100 rooms are set across four buildings that face the pool and sea and include roughly 500-square-foot deluxe rooms, one- and two-bedroom suites and a pair of penthouses. Decor in neutral hues and varied textures (think cream bouclé chaises and padded headboards) is common to all categories, and butlers, who take care of restaurant reservations and spa appointments, service all but deluxe rooms.

Many suites feature walk-in “party showers,” which span the length of the bathroom, plus striking soaking tubs that your butler will fill with bubbles and flower petals at your request. But for a worthy splurge, book one of the penthouses, which clock in at a spacious 2,800 square feet and comprise three bedrooms, a full kitchen, laundry facilities and a telescope for stargazing.

      The Bars and Restaurants

Upstairs in the main building, Regatta serves a buffet and à la carte breakfast, both indoors and on the pool-view patio. If you’re ordering off the menu, you can’t go wrong with the Smoked Benny (with smoked salmon) or the Saltfish Benny, made with deep-fried swordfish cakes. Pressed for time? Head downstairs for a coconut mango chia parfait at the grab-and-go Flamingo Café, which serves snacks and house-made gelato all day.

Lunch options include the beachfront food truck Jack & Jenny’s, which offers a veggie-forward selection of snacks and grilled items, including baba ghanoush, quinoa bowls and lamb kebabs. There’s also the open-air, poolside restaurant Cobo Bar & Grill, where the tangy, ceviche-style conch salad offers a true taste of the TCI. At dinner, Regatta rolls out a Caribbean fusion menu, featuring items such as grilled shrimp skewers, West Indies vegetable curry and blackened snapper. The more casual Sisal Bar + Fare, an indoor-outdoor bar and restaurant, serves flatbreads with choose-your-own toppings. Also make time for the “White Gold Dinner” at Brine, which pays tribute to the island’s salt-raking history with either a five- or eight-course tasting menu. Each course is paired with a selection of flavored salts (think citrus, turmeric and rosemary), and guests leave with a vial of each as a memento.

      The Standout Feature

The Grounding Salt Stone Massage at the spa is an absolute must for tense, tired muscles.

Salterra’s spa is a self-contained oasis where you could easily spend an entire day. There are eight treatment rooms, an adults-only pool, a steam room and a sauna lined with salt bricks (purported to boost respiratory health). Therapies include the Grounding Salt Stone Massage, which incorporates warm local salt to release tension and promote relaxation. You’ll basically slither off the massage table afterward.

      The Vibe

The Watermelon Sugar High cocktail at Cobo Bar & Grill pairs perfectly with pool and beach views.

What are people drinking? Cobo Bar & Grill’s refreshing—and potent—Watermelon Sugar High (with tequila, watermelon and sea salt) pairs perfectly with pool and beach views.

The perfect spot for your social media post: Guests love to pose next to the resort’s huge metal Fireball, the terraced pool in front of them and the sapphire sea shimmering in the background.

The souvenir from the gift shop you’re bringing home: Local brand Okaicos’s trucker caps are what all the cool kids are wearing these days.

The local spot everyone’s talking about: In the backyard of a private home just a five-minute drive from the resort, Triple J’s Grill serves up heaping plates of barbecue and a killer rum punch on Fridays and Saturdays.
