Singapore’s reputation for having nothing but big-brand business hotels is long gone. Recently, this glittering metropolis has evolved into one of Asia’s most creative hubs, and design-forward stays have popped up between the candy-colored shophouses of Chinatown, along the beaches of Sentosa Island and even in the rainforest that hems the city-state’s northern border.
Each of the hotels below, all of which opened within the past few years, offers a unique perspective on modern Singapore. Some champion local artists and designers, while others dive deep into the stories, food culture and heritage of their respective neighborhoods—with tip-top spas and celebrity-chef restaurants to boot. There is no wrong choice.

A stay at Southeast Asia’s first Mondrian outpost feels like stepping into a contemporary art museum. A towering sculpture by street artist KAWS greets you at the entrance, while a rainbow-hued piece literally spills across the lobby floor. Neon words by Tracey Emin light up the walls at Bottega Di Carna, Tuscan butcher Dario Cecchini’s meat-heavy Italian restaurant, and sultry black-and-white pictures match the retro vibe of the poolside Canyon Club bar. Even the 302 rooms and suites get the gallery treatment, with shophouse-inspired prints that can be brought to life with a smartphone app.

If you want to keep your finger on the pulse of what’s hot in Singapore, staying at The Standard is a smart bet. The hotel’s calendar is packed with events, from Pride-themed parties to rowdy bingo nights at Café Standard, the terrazzo-covered social hub on the ground floor. A who’s who of Southeast Asia’s creative set left their marks on the interiors, from the kaleidoscopic wallpaper murals in Kaya izakaya by Thai designer Saran Yen Panya, to a larger-than-life floral sculpture in the courtyard by Singaporean artist Samuel Xun. The 143 rooms are snug but supremely comfortable (opt for a suite if you’re after more space), but you’ll likely spend most of your time by the garden-fringed pool, anyway.

With properties from Bali to the Turks and Caicos Islands, COMO Hotels and Resorts might be one of Singapore’s best-known hospitality exports. It took the group over 30 years, however, to open a hotel on its home turf. COMO Metropolitan Singapore brings the brand’s sleek, wellness-heavy style to a gleaming high-rise in the heart of the Orchard Road area, with 156 sun-soaked rooms, a rooftop pool and a dining lineup that includes a patisserie by French pastry whiz Cédric Grolet and an outpost of New York City’s wildly creative COTE Korean steakhouse.

If you’ve stayed at an EDITION hotel before, you’ll clock plenty of the brand’s hallmarks in its Singapore outpost. Still, this 204-room hotel just off mall-lined Orchard Road is also filled with local flavor: The greenhouse-like lobby conservatory, wrapped in greenery and dangling ferns, riffs on Singapore’s famous Botanic Gardens, while drinks at the blue-hued Punch Room (another EDITION signature) take inspiration from the city’s multicultural pantry, with ingredients like betel leaf, pandan and coconut. You’ll find some of Singapore’s best restaurants at your doorstep, but dine at least once at FYSH, the hotel’s seafood-centric spot, where everything from fish heads to scales end up in curries, burgers and laksa noodles.
Raffles Sentosa Singapore

As an island offshoot of Singapore’s most emblematic hotel, the nearly 140-year-old Raffles Singapore, Raffles Sentosa trades old-world glamour for beach-resort vibes. Just a short walk from Sentosa Island’s Palawan Beach (and about a 15-minute drive from downtown), the 62 sleek, spacious villas sit in gardens dotted with century-old ficus trees and free-roaming peacocks, and open onto private terraces with plunge pools and linen-draped cabanas. Interiors blend the brand’s tropical roots with breezy modern touches such as travertine and soft lighting, with hues of sage, coral and cream, while Raffles’ signature drink, the Singapore Sling, has received an island update with passion fruit and Southeast Asian citrus.

On the border of Chinatown and the Central Business District, the 324-room Clan Hotel pays tribute to the surrounding area’s mercantile heyday. From the Chinese tea ceremony that welcomes you at check-in to the local antiques lining the triple-height lobby, nods to the past are woven throughout the property, but never tip into pastiche. This is a top spot if you want to learn more about the district’s history, whether you join one of the complimentary neighborhood walks, take a hawker-center food tour or get hands-on during the daily-changing roster of workshops, which includes calligraphy and scent-making.

Open the curtains in your room at Mandai Rainforest Resort, and you might feel like you’ve woken up in the Balinese jungle. Set on a reservoir in northern Singapore’s lush Mandai Wildlife Reserve, this nature-focused retreat swaps the city’s typical glass-and-steel skyline views for mangroves and towering rain trees. Its 338 rooms are spread across low-rise buildings designed to blend into the surrounding jungle, with plenty of passageways in between to let the local wildlife—macaques and hornbills among them—pass through. The real showstoppers, though, are the tree-house suites, where you can spot monkeys from your balcony while you sip your morning coffee.
METT Singapore
Fort Canning Park
Taking over the former British Far East Command Headquarters, a bone-white colonial building that sits atop the hilly Fort Canning Park, the recently opened METT Singapore fuses the past with the present. The high ceilings, wooden floors and colonnaded walkways echo the building’s 1920s heritage, while perks such as plush pillow menus and an on-site padel court are much more modern. Fuel up with coconutty laksa noodles during breakfast in the Canning Bar & Lounge, then, after a day of shopping along nearby Orchard Road, book a session in The Longevity Suite, which, with its cryotherapy booth and hyperbaric oxygen chamber, is among Singapore’s most tech-savvy spas.

With its maximalist black-and-gold façade, Duxton Reserve Singapore—set in a row of eight adjoining shophouses in Chinatown—is impossible to miss. Inside, however, the intimate stay is a hush-hush haven of dark timber, chinoiserie fixings and jewel-toned textiles that feels like a private collector’s hideaway. Each of the 49 rooms and suites is unique in size and style, and comes furnished with a four-poster bed, boldly patterned wallpaper and a spa-like bathroom. And don’t skip the martinis at Anouska’s, the hotel’s homage to Bond girl turned designer Anouska Hempel.
