Just over two hours south of Los Angeles, San Diego combines coastal vibes with the energy of a city twice its size. Famous for its world-class zoo, Pacific beaches that attract surfers and families, abundance of breweries and year-round sunshine, America’s so-called Finest City also has great bars, coffee shops and restaurants and a thriving hotel scene—a very good thing when it comes time to hang your hat after a long day of exploring. Whether you’re looking to shack up at a shiny new spot in the Gaslamp Quarter or stay in the lap of luxury in Del Mar, San Diego delivers something for every traveler.

Located in the Gaslamp Quarter, within walking distance of Petco Park (the home stadium of the San Diego Padres baseball team) and the San Diego Convention Center, Pendry San Diego—the brand’s debut outpost—is a downtown destination for eating, drinking and dozing. The urban boutique hotel has loft-style rooms, a great spa for massages and facials, and five different bars and restaurants, including Provisional, the all-day SoCal-meets-Mediterranean spot for wood-fired pizza and fresh catch and Nason’s Beer Hall, best for local craft brews, farmers market-inspired burgers and board games.

Set inside a commanding, neoclassical-style landmark in downtown, The US Grant has welcomed a dozen presidents since it opened in 1910. Today, the historic home-away-from-home, which debuted a fresh look in 2006, draws a more diverse crowd—the clientele is less “leader of the free world” and more leisure travelers and business executives who just wrapped a conference. The stately lobby retains a sense of bygone splendor with soaring ceilings, crystal chandeliers and ornate Corinthian-style columns, while the 270 guest rooms and suites are elegant with abstract drip-painting headboards, crisp white linens and houndstooth carpets.

Travelers looking for a harborfront home base that’s still walking distance to many attractions will appreciate the InterContinental San Diego’s prime location. Situated along the San Diego Bay, the hotel is a short stroll to the USS Midway Museum, Waterfront Park, Seaport Village and Little Italy. More than just a launchpad for exploring, however, it has 400 rooms featuring floor-to-ceiling windows (we recommend splurging on a Club-level room for lounge access), plus a rooftop pool overlooking the bay. It’s also a great dining destination; the coastal Southern California cuisine and west-facing windows offering sunset views at Vistal Bar + Restaurant are a highlight.

Impressive in both scale and style, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar encompasses 400 acres of gardens, undulating canyons and eucalyptus groves. Conceptualized as a vacation destination in its own right, this enormous, Mediterranean-inspired resort has four heated pools (three of which welcome families), two tennis courts, a golf course, an equestrian center, a spa, a gym and fitness studio, and six different restaurants and bars—so you scarcely need to leave the grounds to find a plethora of activities. Inside, guest quarters range from sophisticated rooms to suites with private terraces and even to palatial three-bedroom villas. Beyond the first-class amenities and accommodations, activities include guided morning hikes and horseback rides, and e-bikes are available for cruising the property.

Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa

Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa sits a comfortable distance from the beautiful (albeit tourist-trodden) Coast Walk Trail and pedestrian-friendly village of La Jolla, and a short drive from Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Comprising 10 acres of greenery and hacienda-style buildings, and without much foot traffic, the sun-dappled property feels like a true Southern California refuge. Relaxing days unfold over garden strolls, massages and eucalyptus steams at the spa, dips in the saltwater pool and cocktails by the adobe fireplaces that dot the grounds. Many of the 210 rooms and suites have balconies or patios to enjoy the mild SoCal weather and the lush surroundings.

    The Westgate Hotel
    Gaslamp Quarter

In contrast to the Spanish-style lodgings that prevail in greater San Diego, The Westgate Hotel goes in a decidedly more opulent direction. The lobby is a fine example of European-inspired grandeur, complete with crystal chandeliers, a Steinway grand piano and an antique Henry Dasson desk adorned with golden cherubs, while the rooms flaunt marble bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows, the better to take in the skyline views. There’s also a full-service spa and a luxurious afternoon tea, plus San Diego’s largest rooftop pool. Or, indulge in a workout on the outdoor track, in the group exercise studio or at the 40,000-square-foot gym with state-of-the-art equipment.

The Guild Hotel, San Diego, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel
    Downtown

A historic haunt of sorts, The Guild Hotel occupies downtown’s magnificent 1920s-era armed services YMCA building, which still bears its ornamental exterior and former signage. In reimaging the property as a 162-room hotel, much care was taken to preserve these original details, while also modernizing spaces for today’s style-conscious travelers. There are velvet couches, herringbone wood floors and arched windows in the lobby, and high ceilings, Stearns & Foster beds and Le Labo toiletries in the rooms, which range from compact queen-size accommodations to a two-bedroom penthouse. Guests can also look forward to cocktails at the sleek bar or in the lovely open-air courtyard.

    The Lafayette Hotel and Club
    North Park

The Lafayette Hotel is a see-and-be-seen playground that’s dripping in zebra print, velvet upholstery, bold colors and a trove of found items. Rooms and bungalows are equally over the top: think striped canopy beds, four-posters with snake lamps wrapping around the bedframe and a chic clash of toile and tropical wallpaper. The result is a lively spot to visit for design inspiration, photo ops, socializing and people watching. There’s a cafe, a cavernous Oaxacan restaurant and a classic 24-hour diner, but the place to be come evening is the atrium Lobby Bar, which buzzes with espresso martini-fueled fervor. On the weekends, the pool also turns up, with a mix of locals and out-of-towners bopping to music and sipping drinks.

Hotel del Coronado, Curio Collection by Hilton
    Coronado

Hotel del Coronado—affectionately known as The Del—dates all the way back to 1888, when East Coast elites would take the train cross country to stay here for the healing sea air and laid-back lifestyle. The landmark recently finished a multi-year, more-than-$550 million renovation that restored the Victorian beauty to its former grandeur while adding contemporary charm in the form of floral wallcoverings, woven vinyl-raffia headboards and blue-and-white Chinoiserie lamps. In addition to the revamp, the property debuted two new dining outlets: Veranda, for Southern California fare in an al fresco setting, and Nobu Del Coronado, for the chain’s famous spicy tuna crispy rice and miso black cod.
