Lisbon didn’t get its first true luxury hotel, the Ritz, until 1959, but in recent years, the capital city has more than made up for lost time. Now peppered across its many scenic hillsides are a diverse array of character-driven lodging options: rejuvenated former palaces with ornate public spaces, design-centric boutiques that prioritize wellness and intimate properties with suites that feel like your artsiest friend’s studio.
No matter what form they take, Lisbon’s hotels offer a unique window into Portuguese design, cuisine and culture—as well as a jumping-off point for exploration. Here are 10 of the best for every type of Lusophile (aka a fan of Portugal).

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade
Avenida da Liberdade

A Lisbon icon since its opening in 1933, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade occupies prime real estate on the Avenida da Liberdade, which is now Lisbon’s high-end shopping district. The elegant lobby, with its Deco-tinged furnishings and palette of deep blues and golds, is the beating heart of the property, while the outdoor swimming pool, surrounded by lush gardens, is downright transportive. The hotel is home to a pair of restaurants that attract guests and locals alike: the grand Cervejaria Liberdade, which is dedicated to Portuguese seafood (like slow-cooked cod loin and roast octopus), and the swanky SEEN Lisboa, which looks out over the city’s gorgeous hilly landscape.

The One Palácio da Anunciada
Baixa

The One Palácio da Anunciada occupies a 16th-century palace, and it wears its aristocratic opulence on its sleeve in some spots, like the Condes de Ericeira Restaurant, which sits beneath a coffered ceiling with hand-painted frescoes. But there’s not a touch of glitz in the guest rooms, which instead seem almost Scandinavian with their clean lines, simple furnishings and unobtrusive grays, blues and beiges. Equally modern are the umbrella-lined pool and sprawling gardens that surround a protected, century-old dragon tree. You can wander into these serene green spaces from O Jardim Wine Bar, the perfect place to spend the afternoon with a crisp glass of Portuguese wine.

Corinthia Lisbon
Campolide

Few Lisbon hotel views can compare to the one at Corinthia Lisbon, which looks onto the 18th-century Águas Livres Aqueduct. Rooms and suites are airy and bright, with soothing neutrals and light blues, plus modern amenities like Bluetooth speakers and Nespresso machines. For a bit of relaxation after a day of exploring the city (those steep hills are no joke!), the on-site spa has a heated pool, sensory showers, a sauna and a steam room, plus signature treatments include facials that incorporate fine diamond particles. Save time to explore the hotel’s lovely outdoor spaces as well, including Olivae Restaurant & Terrace, which is surrounded by gnarled olive trees.

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon
Amoreiras
Member of The Edit by Chase Travel
In the 1950s, the Portuguese dictator called for the construction of a grand hotel that would help Lisbon compete with other European capitals for tourists. The result: this imposing modernist structure on Parque Eduardo VII, which came under the Four Seasons umbrella in the late 1990s. Guest rooms and suites display the brand’s signature elegance, plus styles as disparate as Art Deco and Louis XVI for a unique look. The hotel is also home to the renowned CURA restaurant, where the tasting menus might include globally inspired dishes such as Sado oyster fricassee with toasted rice.

Bairro Alto Hotel
Bairro Alto
Set behind a bright yellow façade, this 87-room hotel sits in the heart of the thrumming Bairro Alto district on historic Praça Luís de Camões. While its buildings date back to the 18th century, interiors strike a fine balance between classic and contemporary: The lobby, for instance, pairs cast-iron sculptures and terrazzo floors with a curvy wooden check-in desk, while guest rooms experiment with texture through glazed tiles and rattan. When it’s time for a meal, there’s a restaurant with a terrace on the fifth floor, a rooftop bar and a ground-floor patisserie directly overlooking the square, offering treats like pastéis de nata (egg custard tarts) and Ginjinha (the city’s beloved sour cherry liqueur).

Sublime Lisboa
Amoreiras
After making a name for itself with a breezy design hotel in the beach town of Comporta, Sublime moved on to the capital city and set up an urban outpost in the Amoreiras neighborhood. Luckily, it’s still a relaxing retreat, tucked away from the tourist scrum. The 15 rooms and suites feature bold geometric wallpapers, richly saturated colors and slightly surrealist art and design pieces—say, a photograph of a broccoli-headed woman or a throw pillow with drawings of two big eyes on it. You can set up spa treatments right in your room, and when it’s time to venture out, the concierge team is happy to set up personalized day trips to spots like Cascais (surfing, sailing and horseback riding on the beach) or more hands-on activities such as wine tasting or azulejo tile painting.

Hotel das Amoreiras
Amoreiras
Opened in 2022, this 19-room hotel anchors the corner of—and draws design inspiration from—Jardim das Amoreiras, a simple neighborhood park shaded by mulberries and ginkgos. You can feel the verdant influence everywhere from the bottle-green tiles on the exterior to the emerald banquettes in the breakfast room and the olive tree that shades the cozy courtyard. That outdoor space is a particularly tranquil spot to sit with a good book and a snack from the hotel’s all-day menu, with bites like Azeitão sheep’s-milk cheese and pata negra ham. For a special stay, book one of the attic suites, which are suffused with natural sunlight from the sloping mansard roof above.

The Ivens, an Autograph Collection Hotel
Chiado
Gazing up at the pale-pink façade of this hotel, you might be surprised to learn the property started life in the 19th century as a warehouse. Inside, the decor departs even further from the building’s backstory, instead nodding to explorers Roberto Ivens and Hermenegildo Capelo, who mapped Africa and brought back word of unknown species in the 1800s. That inspiration might show up as a sculpted elephant head on your bedroom wall, lively botanical wallpapers, potted palms or pillows printed with monkeys. The Ivens is also home to an Italian osteria, a crudo spot and an ornate cocktail lounge with floral seating and a horseshoe-shaped marble bar.

The Verse
Misericordia
Instead of a traditional hotel, The Verse is a collection of 15 luxury apartments with midcentury-inspired furnishings, slouchy couches, fully equipped kitchens and artworks jauntily leaned against the walls—with many pieces designed across Portugal. Adding to the residential vibe, the property is located in the quieter Misericordia neighborhood, just a few minutes’ walk from the neoclassical parliament building and its stately gardens. But if you still value hotel amenities, you’re in luck: There’s a sunny reception area and a compact lobby bar, where signature cocktails from the tap are paired with curated playlists or live DJ sets.

AlmaLusa Alfama
Alfama
With its tangled warren of narrow streets and Moorish architecture, hillside Alfama is Lisbon’s most historic neighborhood, and AlmaLusa Alfama fits in beautifully. It’s hidden in a goldenrod building with roots that date back to the 12th century. Each of the 25 guest rooms is unique, though they all feature Portuguese-made mattresses and cotton sheets, black-and-white tiled bathrooms and accent walls featuring images of palms or other trees; some look out over the cathedral, while others face the Tagus River. The concierge can set guests up on sailing trips, professional photo shoots, surfing excursions and pastéis de nata baking classes, to name just a few of the activities offered in and around the city.
