Hotels evolve for a variety of reasons: Maybe it’s been more than a few decades since the property debuted, or there’s been a natural disaster or a new owner sweeps in with a clear and differentiated vision for the place. Another way for a hotel to clean the slate? By choosing a building with an already impressive pedigree and making it their own. The following hotels are a mix of all of the above—but they’re united in their embrace of the next chapter.

Grand Bohemian Lodge Asheville, Autograph Collection
Asheville, North Carolina

Hard-hit by Hurricane Helene in 2024, this Biltmore Village mainstay reopened in May 2025 after a major refurbishment. Custom North Carolina-made furnishings now complement the restored European hunting lodge-inspired details, and Red Stag Grill has an elevated wine vault that now houses over 700 bottles.

InterContinental Indianapolis
Indianapolis, Indiana

The Circle City got its first new luxury hotel in roughly two decades with the 2025 debut of this hotel inside the historic Illinois Building. Original details, including gilded elevators and a gold terra-cotta cornice, were shined up for the occasion—and more modern additions, like the swanky rooftop bar with views of the Indiana Statehouse, certify its status as Indy’s hottest address.

Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa
Baden-Baden, Germany

Unveiled in October 2025, the two-year-long refresh of this historic, wellness-driven hideaway didn’t do away with the details that have distinguished this property since 1834. If anything, it enhanced them: Windows were replaced with green glass to match their original color, uncovered during an analysis of early construction plans, while every bathroom reintroduced classic refurbished fittings.

Regent Santa Monica Beach
Santa Monica, California

Set in the former Loews hotel in Santa Monica, this beachfront resort opened in 2024 with 167 sprawling rooms and suites, a stunning pool deck and a 10,000-square-foot Guerlain spa. The sophisticated restaurant serving Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare from a celebrity chef is merely the delicious cherry on top.

Hotel Eden Roc Ascona
Ascona, Switzerland

Inviting in the natural world is the new goal of this swish hotel on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore, thanks to a renovation—overseen by its original pairing of designer and architect—that was completed in early 2025. Rooms are lighter and brighter, with airy fabrics, larger windows and glass balustrades that frame lake views, while the two-and-a-half-acre Garden of Eden now offers direct access to the hotel’s private harbor.

Huka Lodge
Taupo, New Zealand
Affectionately known by Kiwis as the “grande dame of luxury lodges,” this 1924 fishing camp turned resort reopened in March 2025 following a $14 million refurbishment. The surrounding landscape, including the lush gardens and nearby Waikato River, are still the main attractions, but they’ve been augmented by an expanded dining room with oil paintings and helicopter excursions that swing over mountain peaks.

The St. Regis Singapore
Singapore
The hotel’s first renovation since its 2008 opening prioritized nods to the nearby botanic gardens, with cherry blossom-patterned headboards and carpets across its 299 rooms, while three brand-new dining outlets—including a blush-pink, ivory and teal Tea Room serving dainty desserts—are places to see and be seen.

Shenandoah Mansions
Richmond, Virginia
Originally a luxury apartment building financed by suffragist Ellen Kidd, this elegant 20th-century brick apartment building just became the first hotel in Richmond’s lively Fan District. The 73 rooms feature four-poster beds clad in block-printed quilts—a nod to the folk artists still working in the Shenandoah Valley. Provided you can stop admiring the decor, there is also a restaurant, a bar and an all-day European-style café to try out.

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni
Bellagio, Italy
This 152-year-old icon in Bellagio revealed sweeping room renovations in March 2025, with changes both big and small. The hotel swapped the carpets for spiffy parquet floors and brought in lighter fabrics and colors—though the beloved handsewn silk duvets remain—and reimagined the chic beach club and state-of-the-art spa with one of the only hammams on Lake Como.

Tierra Atacama
San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
A $20 million refurbishment unveiled in spring 2025 brought this Atacama Desert lodge up to contemporary standards. Though this wild pocket of Chile has always drawn travelers, its visitors will no doubt multiply, thanks to the hotel’s four fresh suites with private pools, a new wine cellar and works by more than 40 local artists that you can scope out while you sip.

Peter Island Resort
Peter Island, British Virgin Islands
It took seven years to rebuild Peter Island’s sole hotel after Hurricane Irma swept through the British Virgin Islands in 2017. But the territory’s largest private island resort has since reemerged better than ever, thanks to new rooms and villas set along the more sheltered Deadman’s Beach.

Hotel del Coronado
Coronado, California
As this grande dame approached its 138th anniversary, the owners decided to celebrate with a six-year, $550 million renovation, which wrapped in June 2025. The overhaul touched everything from the formerly dark, Victorian-style guest rooms, livened up with floral wallpaper and raffia headboards, to the historic courtyard, which was restored to its original design—pergolas included.
