When we travel, we can be anyone we want—or at least play pretend. But some places lend themselves to fantasy more than others, inviting us to step outside our routines and into something more cinematic. These nine hotels, from a proper English countryside estate to a luxury dude ranch in Montana, are designed for anyone itching to slip into another reality altogether. Check in, immerse yourself in your surroundings and let your imagination run wild.

      Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire
      Dogmersfield, England

It’s easy to imagine yourself as the central character in a 19th-century novel of manners as you stroll the meadows and quiet paths of this restored Georgian manor house in pastoral Hampshire. Days here are unhurried and genteel—horseback riding, afternoon tea and fireside evenings, plus time to draft sentimental yet restrained letters in The Drawing Room. But all that Regency era-esque charm comes with 21st-century perks: a decadent spa and glass-ceilinged indoor pool, tennis courts, a game room for kids and dry-aged rib eyes with truffle fries at the elegant restaurant, Wild Carrot.

      Glenmere Mansion
      Chester, New York

Staying at Glenmere feels like stepping into a Belle Époque reverie, when leisure was an art form and excess was the norm. There are only 15 rooms at this glamorous Hudson Valley mansion, once the country home of the head of a Manhattan real estate dynasty. Do as a captain of industry would and book the two-bedroom penthouse; there’s even a fireplace in the marble bathroom, right next to the soaking tub. Promenade through the Italianate gardens or play a game of croquet, with your sweater carefully tied over your shoulders, and pencil in an afternoon at the spa, luxuriating in the Carrara marble hammam and relaxing with a soothing massage. Dinner is a candlelit affair at The Supper Room, where you can indulge in poached Maine lobster and Black Angus filet mignon as you toast to the good life.

      Ashford Castle
      Cong, Ireland

For fairy-tale fantasies, it’s tough to beat the 800-year-old Ashford Castle in County Mayo, near Ireland’s famed coastal touring route, the Wild Atlantic Way. You’ll find yourself standing a little taller as you walk through the opulent grand foyer and into this meticulously preserved property, where public spaces and rooms are bedecked with crystal chandeliers, Victorian-era furniture and museum-worthy paintings and tapestries. Splurge on a suite; after all, royalty deserves a canopy bed and claw-foot tub. Then, imagine the vast grounds and walled gardens are yours as you take a morning stroll, accompanied by the property’s Irish wolfhounds, and enjoy some princely pampering in the award-winning spa. You’ll want to dress for dinner in the George V Dining Room, which has hosted princes and presidents alike. A glass of champagne to start? Of course.

      The Ranch at Rock Creek
      Philipsburg, Montana

Live out your Wild West dreams at this all-inclusive guest ranch tucked among the rolling green hills of southwestern Montana, halfway between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks. Spend your days horseback riding (the property will even supply the boots), fly-fishing and honing your sharpshooting skills. Little buckaroos can even pan for sapphires in the creek. Of course, you won’t be roughing it like the ranchers of yore. Digs are luxurious, more movie-set western than the real deal: log cabins with four-poster beds and leather armchairs, lodge rooms with cowhide rugs and wood-paneled walls. Meals are even more refined, with multicourse menus highlighting local Wagyu beef and trout, and wines from small U.S. producers. But you can still end your night outside by the fire, gazing at the stars.

      Post Ranch Inn
      Big Sur, California
Member of The Edit by Chase Travel

Post Ranch Inn is Big Sur at its most theatrical. Cliff-top rooms hover 1,200 feet above the Pacific, and the fog rolls in unannounced, making you feel captive to the clouds. (Amplifying the effect: The stretch of California State Route 1, aka Highway 1, connecting Big Sur reopened in January 2026, after being closed for three years due to landslides. The roadway briefly closed again in February, but has since reopened.) For some extra drama, stay in one of the stilt-raised Tree Houses or in the Butterfly, a marvel of reclaimed wood designed to look like a butterfly with its wings outstretched. While it would be easy to while away a day watching the crashing waves from your balcony, you’ll want to lean in to adventure: Take a falconry session, let a shaman recalibrate your energy at the spa or road-trip along the coast, ideally in a convertible, top down, wind blowing through your hair. Even a dip in one of the infinity pools could turn into an unexpected whale-watching extravaganza.

      Ritz Paris
      Paris, France

Waltz through the Ritz’s porticoed doors on Place Vendôme and you’ll feel as though you’ve entered a time warp. You can almost see the legendary artists, writers and fashion designers sitting at the Ritz Bar, tossing back a martini (or three). Join them. You, too, can be an artist in your prime, with all of Paris—including the Louvre and Jardin des Tuileries, which are within walking distance—ready to stoke your creativity. After visiting museums, shopping along the Champs-Élysées and sharing fresh ideas with fellow bons vivants over champagne in Bar Hemingway, soak up the beauty and history of your accommodations (while wearing the Ritz’s signature plush peach robe, of course). Even the smallest room at the Ritz is a dream, complete with ornate writing desk and marble fireplace. Don’t forget to pack your journal—or at least your laptop.

      Cosme, a Luxury Collection Resort
      Naousa, Greece

Paros is the kind of island that encourages reinvention. Here, you’re more carefree, more trusting, the kind of person who doesn’t shy away from second glances or long conversations with a stranger over a glass of crisp Assyrtiko as the sun sets. Romance feels woven into daily life: It’s there along the cobblestoned streets in the whitewashed villages glowing at golden hour, the sculpted granite coves of Kolymbithres Beach. Set right on the water near the elegant fishing village of Naousa, Cosme, a Luxury Collection Resort offers 40 serene suites, many overlooking the cobalt Aegean. You’ll want to linger on your private terrace or beside the half-moon infinity pool. It’s easy to make connections, and—who knows—you may even leave with a love story of your own.

      Monteverdi Tuscany
      Castiglioncello del Trinoro, Italy

Set within a restored medieval village and surrounded by vineyards and cypress trees, Monteverdi Tuscany feels designed for creative escapes—hotel as muse. Inspiration can be found at every turn: on a guided hike in nearby Pietraporciana Nature Reserve, at the property’s contemporary art gallery, during a pasta-making class or wine tasting, and even in your elegantly decorated room, with its exposed-beam ceiling, bespoke furnishings from local artisans, fresh flowers by the bedside and gauzy curtains billowing in the breeze. The view out that open window is breathtaking, an invitation to write your own perfect ending—or beginning.

      Manoir Hovey
      North Hatley, Quebec

A summer manor house turned boutique hotel in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, Manoir Hovey exudes cozy-mystery vibes—especially in the fall, when the birches and oaks blaze yellow and orange. The cloistered setting along the shores of Lake Massawippi feels slightly removed from the modern world. This is the kind of place made for whispered conversations in the library (lined with leather-bound books), long dinners by the fireplace at the seasonally driven Le Hatley Restaurant and plenty of quiet intrigue along the shadowed lakeside trails. For optimal privacy, book one of the four cabins (there are also 46 rooms and suites, plus a cottage); the Birches Cabin has a spacious patio and hot tub, best enjoyed on chilly nights when the moon hangs high, illuminating the lake.
