There’s something particularly magical about Venice’s hotel scene. This is where 15th-century palazzos double as resorts and dinners come with canal views, after all. Some properties are just steps from the city’s most iconic squares and churches, while others sit away from the action on their own private islands. But no matter the location, each one offers a unique Venetian story. Whether you’re drawn to the historic grandeur of The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice, the A-list reputation of Hotel Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel, Venice or the pastel-hued whimsy of Il Palazzo Experimental, there’s a perfect hideaway here for you.

You may know it as a certain A-list couple’s wedding venue, but Hotel Cipriani’s appeal extends far beyond its celebrity clientele. Opened in 1958 on Giudecca Island (located across the lagoon from Venice’s historic center), the Belmond property is at once serene and quintessentially Venetian; for example, guests can choose to arrive via private boat shuttle from St. Mark’s Square. Outdoors, lush gardens and a heated pool set a tranquil scene, while inside, spacious rooms have plush curtains and fresh flowers for an elegant feel. Reserve a table at ORO restaurant for an award-winning seven-course meal right outside your door.

The Gritti Palace is one of Venice’s most storied properties—and in a city like this, that’s saying something. Housed in a 15th-century palazzo once owned by the aristocratic Pisani family and later passed to Doge Andrea Gritti, hence its name, the hotel more than lives up to its history. The 82 lavish rooms and suites feature Murano glass chandeliers, gilded headboards and marble bathrooms, and the Club del Doge Restaurant, which sits on the Grand Canal, only adds to the romance. Book a tailored excursion on Il Doge, the hotel’s private Italian speedboat, and you’ll quickly understand why the property has hosted so many distinguished guests over the years.

Situated directly on the Grand Canal, The St. Regis Venice encompasses multiple palazzos, the oldest of which dates back to the 17th century, with a total of 124 rooms and 39 suites featuring private terraces and Basilica Santa Maria della Salute views. True to brand, the property offers several deluxe amenities, such as private butler service with every room and a nightly champagne sabering ritual in the garden. Enjoy cocktails under the moonlight at Arts Bar, which spills out onto the canal-side Ginori Terrace in warmer months, or book a soothing treatment at Valmont Spa.

      Violino d’Oro
      San Marco

Just a quick stroll from St. Mark’s Square, Violino d’Oro is a family-run hotel in a 17th-century palazzo. Though historical, the property feels more like your chic Venetian friend’s home, packed with antiques and curated artwork. The 32 individually styled rooms are also bespoke and cozy, with decorative touches like handmade vases, Murano glass lamps, velvet sofas and gold-framed mirrors. You’ll spend most of your time exploring the landmarks just steps from your front door, but the hotel (and its friendly vibe) are a welcome respite after a day of sightseeing.

      Nolinski Venezia
      San Marco

Opened in 2023, Nolinski Venezia puts a contemporary spin on the classic Venetian hotel. The Evok property occupies the 1920s Stock Exchange building—a rarity in a city of converted palazzos—and the Art Nouveau–influenced exterior stands out on the canal. The lobby boasts a stately colonnade and powder-pink velvet chairs, and the 43 rooms (including 13 suites) are cool and modern, with gray plaster walls and handblown lamps. There’s also a stunning spa covered in Ottoman-inspired mosaics and featuring an indoor pool with 360-degree city views. And the on-site restaurant, Il Caffè, has a pretty inner courtyard lined with fabric umbrellas.

      Ca’ Pisani Deco Design Hotel
      Dorsoduro

Ca’ Pisani was Venice’s first ever design hotel, set in an elegant 14th-century palazzo but reimagined in 2000 with bold 1930s and ’40s furniture and splashes of Art Deco style. Its 29 rooms combine classic building features with midcentury decor (think: towering ceilings, dark-wood window frames, colorful chairs and mosaic-tiled bathrooms), while La Rivista Restaurant serves fresh Italian cuisine among blue marble tables and Futurist yellow sofas. The overall atmosphere is artful and intimate, perfect for folks coming to Venice for the aesthetics.

      Charming House DD724
      Dorsoduro

Down a quiet alley in the Dorsoduro district, Charming House DD724 (so named for its address) is a peaceful boutique property with bold, angular decor. The daring aesthetic works perfectly with the hotel’s surroundings, most notably the Peggy Guggenheim Collection garden within eyesight, and continues from the entryway into the rooms, where exposed wood beams hover over dark textiles and abstract paintings by artist Gianni Tarli. Other spaces include a breakfast room and a low-ceilinged library for rainy days.

      Il Palazzo Experimental
      Dorsoduro

This 32-room property, housed in a 16th-century palazzo, comes courtesy of Experimental group and designer Dorothée Meilichzon, who is known for her eclectic, colorful style. And it’s a design lover’s dream. There are pastel interiors, velvet banquettes, arched doorways and headboards, and symmetrical layouts. Many rooms overlook the canal or a secret garden, and some even have private balconies. Don’t miss the Experimental Cocktail Club, where you can enjoy fun drinks behind a hidden doorway in the lobby.

      Hotel Gabrielli
      Castello

Fresh from a meticulous restoration in 2025, Hotel Gabrielli is a jewel on Riva degli Schiavoni, within walking distance of St. Mark’s Square. The 66 rooms were pared down from 105 during the renovation, meaning they’re now spacious and airy, with antique wood beams and Murano glass chandeliers adding a Venetian wink to the bright, contemporary furnishings. Between city outings, guests can relax on the rooftop bar, stroll through the property’s private garden or sweat it out in La SPA’s sauna and Turkish bath.

JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa
      Isola delle Rose

Offering a calming contrast to Venice’s canal-side grandes dames, JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa sits on its own private island a couple miles away from San Marco. Guests can book a complimentary boat shuttle and reach St. Mark’s Square in about 20 minutes, but the island’s olive groves, rose garden and three pools (including one on the roof) make a strong case for staying put. Minimalist furnishings and soothing tones in the guest rooms only enhance the desire to kick back and relax. Instead of fighting crowds in town, spend a day working through the menu at the sprawling spa, which includes a vitality pool and bio-sauna, or taking a pasta-making class at the on-site cooking academy.
