Q. How does the 5% promotion work?
A. You'll earn 4% bonus cash back in addition to your 1% standard cash back for a total of 5% cash back, on up to $1,500 in purchases in the bonus categories. You must activate your 5% cash back before September 14, 2011 and use your card between July 1 and September 30, 2011 in the bonus categories to earn bonus cash back. You'll earn your bonus at places that classify their merchant location for Visa/Mastercard as gas stations, airlines, or lodging establishments.

Online and catalog purchases are not eligible to receive the bonus rewards unless the merchants have correctly identified and billed the transactions. We do not determine whether merchants correctly identify and bill transactions as being made in each category. However, we reserve the right to determine which purchases qualify for the bonus rewards. For you to receive the bonus, your account must be open and not in default at the time the bonus is fulfilled.

Q. What types of gas purchases are not included?

Gas stations that have a convenience store that sells food and other items may classify purchases made within the store as convenience store purchases rather than gas purchases. Purchases made at truck stops, oil and propane distributors, and home heating companies will not earn 5% cash back as these are not classified as gas purchases by the merchant.
