The Captain's Picks Episode 1: The Ryder Cup Mystique
Chase Sapphire Preferred is the official credit card of the Ryder Cup.
On September 27, the Ryder Cup— a biennial golf tournament--returns to the US for the first time in four years. Once again, the European golf team will battle the US, hoping to continue its string of three consecutive tournament wins. Leading the US team is returning 2012 American Captain, Davis Love III. With bitter memories of his loss during the 2012 Ryder Cup, at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, Love has no plans to go home without a trophy.
For Love, the stakes are high. The Ryder Cup is, of course, a competition between the best American and European golfers. Captains spend a solid year building a team, planning the event, and analyzing matchups, hoping to win. Europe has won 8 of the last 12 Ryder Cups; the US last won a Ryder Cup tournament in 2008, at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Love says the event is a time for the PGA Tour's top performers to come together for a common goal. "We're individuals all year long," he says, adding: "Now, we get to be a part of a team."
Days before the 2016 Ryder Cup tournament opens at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, Love sat down with Chase for an in-depth look at how he plans to lead the Americans to victory. In this first episode of our series, The Captain's Pick, Love shares his passion for the competition. He also reflects on following in the footsteps of the captains who led Americans to success at previous Ryder Cup tournaments. "We know that it's still a golf match, and that we may win or lose," Love says. "But we're gonna' go into it this time more prepared, more ready to go."
In the next episode, Love explains how previous Ryder Cup captains Tom Lehman, Paul Azinger and Tom Kite—in addition to lots of statistics—are helping him compete against the European team.
With 5 more episodes of The Captain's Pick remaining, look forward to in-depth interviews with Captain Davis Love III, other members of the US team, an exclusive look at Hazeltine National Golf Club, the rich history of the Ryder Cup, and much more.
