Video transcript: Debit or Credit?
On screen:
As this video begins, actor and comedian Kevin Hart sits on his living room couch as his college-age daughter, Heaven, enters the room. She carries a lamp and candle holders - which she puts down on a coffee table.
Heaven:
What’s up, player!
Kevin Hart
[chuckles]
What’s going on with you?
Heaven:
Nothing much.
Kevin Hart
Where’re you coming from?
Heaven:
Uh, I just bought some stuff.
On screen:
Kevin Hart looks over to Heaven with suspicion.
Kevin Hart
For?
Heaven:
My dorm.
Kevin Hart
What’d you use to pay for it?
Heaven:
I used my debit card.
Kevin Hart
Money spent and gone.
On screen:
Heaven closes her eyes...
Heaven:
I can’t.
Kevin Hart
Hm?
Heaven:
I can’t.
Kevin Hart
Let’s talk about debit vs. credit for a second.
Heaven:
How are they not the same? They sound the exact same.
Kevin Hart
Really? Say debit and then say credit.
Heaven:
Debit credit. If I was a rapper, I could be Debit Credit spending money.
On screen:
Kevin Hart fights back a smile before delivering some facts.
Kevin Hart
OK, alright Heaven, look.
Heaven:
Explain it to me.
Kevin Hart
Credit is a trust, it’s a relationship between you and a financial institution. It’s a relationship that says, “Hey, if you give me this, over the course of time I will pay it back.”
On screen:
Heather raises her hand.
Kevin Hart
Go ahead.
Heaven:
Why can’t I just use yours?
Kevin Hart
Because it’s mine, honey!
On screen:
Heaven grins slyly, with a tiny giggle.
Kevin Hart
So what I want you to do is do the research, get a credit card at this time in your life, and build a nice history and rapport of spending habits. Go, like, to Chase; Chase has a nice Freedom Rise card, alright…
On screen:
Heaven nods her head, slightly, in agreement.
Kevin Hart
...and it’s for beginners that are just establishing credit. But you need to practice good habits. You need to prepare for the things you’re gonna want in the future.
Heaven:
Yeah, I guess I can… kind of understand.
Kevin Hart
Yes, you can understand that. I messed up my credit when I was your age. I don’t want you to do the same. Don’t do what I did; do what I didn’t do to do the things that I couldn’t do based off of what I would do.
Heaven:
Alright!
On screen:
She grins, slyly.
Kevin Hart
Alright?
Heaven:
Think I got it.
Kevin Hart
Grass is only out there…
On screen:
Heaven hurries away, leaving Kevin Hart alone in the living room.
Heaven:
Alright! Alright! Alright!
Kevin Hart
…because you didn’t cut it. I’m a good father.
