Man:
Oh, curveball.
On screen:
A man with salt-and-pepper hair, green eyes, and a stylish jacket, Ryan Serhant, speaks to the viewer. He stands in front of a blue door decorated with the Chase octagon symbol. A path of eight white sidewalk steps (with low-level pathway lights) lead to this door.
Ryan:
Hi, I'm Ryan Serhant. And today, I'm working with Chase to challenge first-time home buyers to open up to one another about their finances. Now as a home lender, Chase knows that couples often avoid the money talk, which is a crucial part of the home buying journey. So we're gonna help couple take the steps that they need to get closer to home. Now let's go meet our couples.

Ryan:
Hello there!
Richard:
Hi.
Miranda:
Hi.
Ryan:
Welcome to Chase's Closer to Home challenge. So the object is to answer enough questions to get you to this door, which symbolizes your future home together.
On screen:
Richard and Miranda smile and look at the blue door.
Richard:
OK.
Ryan:
Are you ready?
On screen:
All of the couples hold up their dry-erase cards and markers.
John:
Ready.
Wil & Amy:
Yes!
Ryan:
Here we go. Would you prefer a bigger house or a shorter commute?
On screen:
A montage shows the different couples writing responses on their dry-erase cards.
Ryan:
Ready? Let's turn it around.
On screen:
Richard and Miranda turn around their cards. Both wrote "Bigger house." They high-five each other with a pop.
Miranda:
Yay!
Richard:
Yeah! That's right!
On screen:
Michael and John turn over their cards, showing that they both chose a shorter commute.
Michael:
Short commute.
Ryan:
Awesome. Congratulations, you can take your first step closer to home.
Miranda:
Yes!
[Miranda laughs.]
On screen:
The couples move onto the first step of the path.
Ryan:
Alright, you ready for the next one?
Amy & Will:
Yes!
Ryan:
L
et's say your lease is up before your house closed. Where would you stay?
On screen:
Did you know? Chase guarantees a quick closing or you get $2,500.
On screen:
Amy and Will hold their cards in silence.
Ryan:
Have you thought about that process?
Amy & Will:
No.
Miranda:
Oh no!
On screen:
Richard and Will turn over their cards, showing that they both chose to stay at Will's parents.
Richard:
Parent's house!
[A ding sound indicates their answers are recognized as matching.]
Miranda & Richard:
Yeah!
Ryan:
Alright, you guys can take one step closer to home.
Michael:
Nice!
On screen:
The couples move forward another step.
Ryan:
So now it's time to turn it up a notch. You ready?
Jessica & Jareth:
[softly] Yeah.
Ryan:
What price house can you guys comfortably afford?
Amy:
Ugh.
On screen:
The couples write down their responses.
On screen:
Did you know? Getting prequalified is the best way to know how much you can afford.
Ryan:
You ready? Let's turn it around.
On screen:
Michael wrote $200,000; John wrote $250,000. A buzz sound indicates their answers don't match. Then, Amy and Will show their cards: Amy wrote $750K; Will wrote $400K. Another buzz sound goes off.
Ryan:
Ooh!
Amy:
[laughter] No, that's half.
Ryan:
This is great.
Amy:
OK, we're learning.
Will:
We're learning.
On screen:
Ryan addresses Richard and Miranda.
Ryan:
Next question. How much does Richard have saved for a down payment?
[Miranda breaths heavily.]
Ryan:
It's a serious financial question.
Jareth:
Oh man.
Jessica:
It is.
On screen:
Did you know? Chase offers down options as low as 3%.
On screen:
Michael and John hold their cards.
Ryan:
You ready?
Michael & John:
I think so.
Michael:
We anywhere near?
On screen:
Michael wrote 25K; John wrote 60K. A buzz sound goes off.
John:
Not anywhere close.
On screen:

Jessica wrote $0. A buzz sound goes off. Ryan reads Jareth's card out loud.
Ryan:
Whatever is in my bank account.
Jareth:
It's pretty good, though.
Jessica:
Ugh.
Jareth:
It's definitely more than that.
Ryan:
Even though you got it “wrong,” your answer was more right than you think, because being able to reveal your finances to each other is a huge step in getting closer to home. So I wanna bring you one step closer to home anyway.
On screen:
The couples take a step closer to the bright blue door.
Jareth:
Awesome.
Jessica:
Sweet.
Ryan:
Almost there, you're getting closer.
On screen:
Ryan reads the next question.
Ryan:
If you're in a bidding war, how far above your max budget would you be willing to go for a house you loved?
On screen:
Close-up of Will and Amy.
Will:
Good luck, honey.
Amy:
Uh yeah, good luck to you.
On screen:
Richard and Miranda turn over their cards: Miranda wrote $5,000; Richard wrote $10,000. A buzz sound goes off.
Miranda:
That was more conservative.
Richard:
Doh! No!
On screen:
Amy and Will show their cards: Amy wrote $3,000; Will wrote "Whatever she wrote."
Ryan:
That's a great answer.
[Amy laughs.]
Amy:
You're playing the game now.
Will:
Yeah.
On screen:
Jareth and Jessica show their cards: Jareth wrote zero dollars; Jessica wrote $10K.
Jessica:
Zero, he won't budge.
Jareth:
We'll always find another dream house. It's not a big deal.
[Jessica sighs.]
Jessica:
This is what I deal with.
On screen:
Medium shot of Ryan.
Ryan:
This is part of the process. And I know it's a little bit uncomfortable, but you're doing the right thing. So, let's take one step closer to home.
Jessica:
We're getting there, babe.
Amy:
This one feels good.
Richard:
We're right there.
Miranda:
Yay! We're almost there.
On screen:
A montage shows the couples moving forward. All of them are just a few steps away from the blue door. Richard smiles and reaches forward, trying to touch it.
Ryan:
OK, your close! Look back and look at how far you've travelled. All these questions, a little bit uncomfortable, but they're important.
On screen:
Close-up of Jessica and Jareth.
Jessica:
Yeah.
Ryan:
These are questions that most couples may never even ask each other. Are you ready for your final question?
On screen:
Close-up of Miranda and Richard.
Miranda:
Yes! I'm ready, I'm ready.
Richard:
Let's make it happen.
Ryan:
Do you feel that you're still ready to buy a house together?
[clarinet music]
Richard:
Yes.
Miranda:
Yay!
On screen:
A montage shows the couples writing their answers and then showing their cards. The cards all read "Yes!"
Ryan:
Oh! You got it right!
Yes with a heart through it.
Jessica:
Woo!
Ryan:
You get to take your final step!
On screen:
A montage shows the four couples happily reaching the blue door!
Ryan:
You just made it to home. How do you feel?
On screen:
Close-ups of each speaker as they share their feelings.
Amy:
It was a little vulnerable.
John:
We should talk more about money and start looking at buying.
Amy:
We need to do it.
Jessica:
Ready to buy a home.
Jareth:
Ready to go.
Ryan:
You guys are awesome.
Miranda:
We did it.
